One of my favorite places in Belgium is Brussels’ Grand Place, especially in the evening, as the medieval buildings loom over us, lit from below, every architectural detail illuminated in splendor.
There’s a sense of history here, of place, of knowing that thousands of people walked a thousand footsteps right where I stand, seeing the same things, hopefully in an awe similar to mine.
I’ve always wanted to see an Ommegang Pageant here, but for Christmas, I’ll settle on a tree.
Except, this year, Belgium decides to go all modern on tradition, inserting an electronic sapin de Noel in place of something real, and ugh, I find this mishmash of old and new a total flop.
Theoretically, it was done out of sensitivity to non-Christians, but I say poo. It looks like poo, and even though the light and sound show with the rock and roll music and changing colors is a dance party, the overall effect is mediocre at best.
Major bummer, Brussels.
